Portable toilets AND showers??? What luxuries...

Port-o-potties.

Just let it sink in.

Seven days....Port-o-potties and nuthin' but...

My tent mates include a group of self-proclaimed Samaritans (I'm really only calling them "self-proclaimed" because they're not from Samaria) that I mistakenly assumed were 14 year old high school students.

Yesterday, when I was trying to be friendly, I asked them, "So...what grade are you guys in?"

They just kinda looked at me and said, "Uh. We're in college."

But wait!! There's a reason I thought they were 14! On Sunday night, the first conversation I overheard was on the ever-controversial color........pink.

Girl #1: Oh my gosh! I luuuuuv pink!

Girl #2: Really?!? You know...me too!!

Girl #1: I mean, I've, like, always liked pink...as a color...but there's really just something about it that has made me want to fight it...

Girl #2: You know...me too!! But, I think that's because our parents always forced it on us...you know..in like clothes and medicines?

The really funny thing is that I'm writing this as they sit directly across from me...brushing their hair...sitting on their Strawberry Shortcake sleeping bags...talking about their dads and boy-crushes....will he approve?!?! Oh my gosh!!

Anyway. I'm being catty.

We're all here working and doing good things...I think.

We finished our first house today. When we started yesterday, it was overwhelming. I can't even think of any other description for it...I was just speachless; as was everyone else.

In most of the houses in this parish, the water was between 10-20 feet high and was well above the roof of the house. So...this means that every ceiling that I've seen so far has already fallen down. Which, of course, sucks when you're looking at the big picture...but, for us, is good.

We're here basically to clean up as much as we can and get the houses ready for mold remediation. So...everything must go.

And I'm talkin' everything...in our first house, here's a picture of "memorbilia" that we salvaged:
Yes. That's it...nothing else. And, in my opinion, this wasn't shit that anyone would really want...but, it was something.

So, that's about it right now. I've met a couple of the homeowners...one's a taxi driver that talked to me and some other peeps for a bit about his issues with the government and others when dealing with this disaster...and the other was an older man that had done a lot of work on his house himself. This was actually pretty impressive. He must have been at least 70 years old and had already moved out furniture, taken down the some of the drywall and other general cleaning duties...

I've managed to wear myself out everyday...as hard-labor will do to ya..so, I haven't had any "fun" yet.

But, tonight....just wait...I'm set to be the chauffer for a group of Duke college students that wanna hit up the bar down the street. The deal is: 1)They buy the beer 2) I let them pile in the back of my truck and drive them to the bar.

Hey, works for me!

Other than that, I think I'll probably take off on Sunday. I found out that the official check out is on Saturday, but a couple of girls in my group offered to share a hotel room with me that night. So, I might just hang out and check out da Big Easy for a night...we'll see how my finances are treating me. Plus, I'm set to be back at work on Monday...so, I'm already ultra-working my body, I might just need a day of rest somewhere in there...just maybe...

Comments:
By now, you've no doubt gotten shitty for free at some dive. See you this weekend.
